The Oathsworn Series by Robert Low
Fuck Vikings are cool. Now I know there's the age old saying "you shouldn't judge a book by its cover". Guilty. Do it all the time. It has never steered me wrong. So, what I quite often do is go into book stores, look for books with cool covers, write down their names, then go to the library and get the book. Fucked if I'm going to pay $40 every time I read a book. You could almost get into Rainbow's End for that price.
Anyway back to Vikings. I'm a bit of a history nerd and a great way to learn a bit about a group or period in history you know little about is a historical novel. A good historical novel in my books (lol get it) is one that makes you empathise with the main characters no matter how cunty they are. Vikings were ruthless cunts. However by the end of the fourth book I felt like I was mad homies with the pillagers and rapists that this book is about and I got sad when people died.
You know when you are reading a book and after a while you realise you haven't actually been taking anything in? That happened to me a lot in the first book. Robert Low's style takes a while to get used to. It's as if he's written it like a Viking would be telling the story around a fire or some shit like that. Once you get into it though they are really hard books to put down. There are some awesome characters and plenty of fight scenes. He doesn't draw the fighting out and get too technical which can sometimes be a bore in this sort of book.
Robert Low himself looks like a bit of a character as well.
