Life of Pi by Yann Martel
I recieved this book as a Christmas gift from my sister. I like getting books as gifts as it makes me step outside my comfort zone of Lee Child Thrillers, historical novels and Stuff. I also like books about India thanks to 'Shantaram' being given to me for Christmas a few years ago. Life of Pi was written about 10 years ago and has done very well since, selling a shit load of copies. As stated above the book takes place to begin with in India. For some reason books about India just make you want to go there and experience the sights, smells blah blah but mainly the food.
Who read 'Hatchet' when they were younger? Cracking good read when I was about 12 - about a boy in a plane crash who ends up in the woods and survives. Life of Pi is like Hatchet on steroi...hmmm protein powder for adults. Basically an Indian boy gets trapped on a life boat with a tiger. That's all I can say without ruining it. There are plenty of themes and symbolism going down. It's one of those books your teacher would make you read in high school for English and then you would analsye the shit out of it and you were sure he/she was just making stuff up. Thanks to all the themes and shit it has become a popular yarn amongst book clubs (middle age women looking for an excuse to drink wine midweek and escape their husbands and children). My version even had discussion questions at the back for reading groups.
It's an easy read and you actually learn some interesting stuff about the sea and animals. I think what I enjoyed the most was the author's ability to make you picture what it would be like to be in the boy's situation through his choice of language...or something like that.
